A man working at a garbage incinerator watches the body of a dead man burned to ashes in the oven. Police detective Martin Beck handles the case. All he knows is that a brutal murder has happened. But he does not know when or where. He has no body, motive or a crime scene, not a single trace. All he has is some teeth and a mysterious Internet adress.

Two patrolling cops stumble on to three criminals who have just stolen large amounts of explosives, and are killed in cold blood. Martin Beck and his team must now work day and night to find out who the killers are and what they are planning to do with the explosives before it's too late. Meanwhile, Gunvald Larsson who was a close friend of one of the murdered cops is ignoring all rules in his quest for revenge.

A body is found floating in the water near Liljeholmen. The dead man is a 39-year-old Danish citizen with a hefty criminal record as a member of a notorious Danish drug network. When his car is found in a suspicious location, Alex and Josef start running surveillance on it. It isn't long before one of the Danish man's associates shows up there. The Danish gang has been weakened over the course of several years after a big bust which sent many of their top ranked members to prison. Maybe the Swedes are preparing to take over? Is the Beck group about to get caught in the middle of a gang war? The gang's leader is serving time in Swedish prison, and the only person he is willing to talk to is Steinar Hovland.
